While Firas is busy playing on his PlayStation, “”Sahm”” the dog nags him to go out. Firas finally gives up and takes him outside. Sahm seems to run toward a specific location, which surprises Firas.
On the way, they meet the girl, the bear, the bird cook, the pirate, and the witch. As they become consumed with curiosity, they follow Sahm and Firas. Each of them is daydreaming and thinking of different things. The girl imagines going to the amusement park; the bear imagines the magical honey; the bird cook daydreams of a beautiful island; the pirate thinks that they are treasure hunting, and the witch thinks of her favorite mushroom.
After a long and treacherous journey, the group reaches its destination. They arrive at a big tree, under which the dog pees then sleeps soundly. They are shocked and disappointed because this is not what they have imagined.

Parent and Teacher guide

My Darling Tree tells a story through humorous and vibrant illustrations about the different perceptions regarding the same event, and how each one of us interprets events and things differently based on our outlooks and interests.

• Game suggestion: For example, the teacher asks one of the school administrators to knock on the door at a certain time, and instead of opening the door, she/he asks the children to guess who is knocking on the door. The teacher encourages different answers and discusses the idea of expectations based on the story.

• Each one of us has a wish that he/she wants to come true. What is your dearest wish?

Questions for discussion:
- Describe the feelings of the characters in the story upon discovering the dog's secret and his eagerness to reach the tree?

- Have you ever been disappointed? Tell us your story.

- Express the different interests and expectations of the following: The girl, the bear, the bird cook, the pirate, and the witch? Were they successful in their expectations? Describe their pictures and reactions when they discovered Sahm's goal?

- If you were one of the characters in the story, what would you think/ wish/ expect?

• Sahm achieved his goal then slept soundly, and ignored his prying friends. What do you think of his behavior?

• Do you take care of a pet in your home? Is it a dog, cat, or another animal? What is its name? Talk about your relationship with your pet.

• Do you take it for a daily walk? What should dog owners do when their dogs want to pee/poop on the pavements?

• Why do dogs like to pee near trees?

About the Author

Mohamad Mouti is a self-taught illustrator and writer. He loves to travel and roam the world. He worked as a character animator for 5 years and then as a cartoonist and storyboard illustrator. When the opportunity arose he worked with a number of publishing houses illustrating books and comics and got many prestigious awards.
