Black Line is an artistic and creative book that combines art, story and imagination and promotes creative thinking. Upon opening the book, the reader sees a black line on a white background. On each spread there is a flap that hides one possibility that a line can be. This encourages the reader to imagine other possibilities before opening the flap.
The black line may be a rope, a ballerina's ribbon, a railway, or a tent's rope....
It can be things from our life and our environment. Kids are encouraged to imagine other things that a line can be.

Questions for discussion:
- Look closely at things around you, how many lines can you see?
- Try to draw a mode of transport with one continuous line (without lifting the pen from the page).
- Do you know how tents are anchored to the ground?
- Draw a kite, how many lines is it made up of?
- There are many different types of lines (thick, thin, squiggly) can you name others?
- We call two lines going in the same direction parallel lines, can you name other line relationships?

About the Author

Yazan Masarweh develops educational programs for children at the Children Museum in Jordan. He is also an active member in puppet shows and the international Red Noses society. After graduation with a BA in translation he decided to work in a different field. Because of his artistic inclinations he worked as a graphic designer for over 15 years and changed course again when he discovered the wonderful world of children books while working with a puppet theatre group. He mastered the art of storytelling and became well known for his exciting presentations. He produced a number of plays for children of different ages. His hands on experience with children story telling and puppet theatre led to his first early reader story “ Zayzafoona

About the Illustrator

Burcu Yılmaz was born in 1986 in Istanbul. She studied Communication Design, Literature, Italian Language and Literature. Her works took part in the Ege University Painters of Children's World and Books Museum, The 50th Bratislava Illustration Biennial, the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair, and exhibitions at home and abroad. In the 17th Tudem Literature Awards - Picture Book Competition, her silent book "When I Leave Home" was deemed second.
