In this story Marwan learns the value of money and the concept of limits. His father tells him he can take what he needs from the neighborhood shop and the school shop but within reason. Marwan enjoys the admiration of his classmates who marvel at how he can get all sorts of goodies from the shop without paying. When Marwan starts buying goodies for his friends, he becomes very popular. Dad is very angry at Marwan when he gets the bills from the two shops, but soon realizes that Marwan is not aware of where the money they spend comes from. He is under the impression that his father’s debit card is a magic card that can buy anything. Marwan’s father takes him to the bank and explains to him how he works hard to make money for the family and then that money is put in a bank and the bank card is like a key to a money box that allows him to spend the money he put in the bank from his hard work.The father decides to start giving Marwan a weekly allowance to help him plan how to spend the money he gets wisely.The story deals with many concepts that parents and teachers can discuss with their students like pocket money, the concept of limits, healthy food, the difference between sharing with friends and giving them things to become popular.
About the Author
Samar Mahfouz Barraj is a Lebanese writer and translator of children’s books. She holds a BA degree and a Teaching Diploma from the American University of Beirut. She is married and has two daughters.
Her long teaching career sparked her passion for children literature and inspired her to write her own stories. Samar writes poems, songs and plays for children.
She works with different publishers and has published 40 books so far. Her first book, “I didn’t mean It” was published by Asala in 2007. A number of her books have been selected on honor lists, short lists and long lists for Awards. Two of her books “When my Friend got Sick” and “My Grandmother Will always Remember me" both by Yuki press won awards.
Samar works for educational publishers and has translated many children books from French, English and Italian. She presents creative writing workshops for children, training workshops for teachers, and participates in various activities to promote reading among children, as an author and an
active member of LBBY.
About the Illustrator
Mona Yakzan is a Lebanese Cypriot artist. She studied illustration and graphic design at Frederick University in Cyprus and got a BA degree in Graphic Design with Printing emphasis then continued studying at the Lebanese American University and got a second BA in Graphic Design with Digital emphasis and graduated with honors. Mona has illustrated a number of children's books as well as children's animation that won awards. She has participated in many workshops in illustration and animation in Lebanon and Europe. Mona strives to always bring something new to every project she works on. Hiba Farran is a graphic designer and Illustrator. She graduated from the American University of Beirut with a Bachelor in Graphic Design. Hiba works on various design projects and illustration. She has Illustrated and designed several children’s books published in Lebanon and abroad. Currently she's interested in the visual translation of knowledge and data to the young audience.
